Rotted Frame

So my friend and i just fiished restoring my 89 f150 I6 after it had been sitting for 3 years with a bad slave cylider. The frame looked pretty rusty but still solid, no cracks. Once it was up and running we took it through some easy wooded trails. When climbing a mildly steep hill we heard a big crunch and the rear driveshaft pop out. We both climbed out and noticed quite to our astonishment that the truck no less than split in half. The only thing keeping it together was the weight of the bed against the cab. Night was falling so we decided to walk back. The next morning we went out with another friends jeep and jacked it up, drilled holes, inserted steel braces and installed the driveshaft. Like the trooper that it is, it made it home in one piece more or less. Our next project: reinforce the entire frame with 1/4 inch steel. Out of curiosity, has anyone else heard of a frame being that horribly rotted that the whole truck just snapped in half?

hope that was entertaining cause it was a blast for me!

Yes I have seen them really bad . Mostly on early 80's trucks . When I look at parts trucks I tap on frame with hammer if big chunks come off I pass. . I don't want it to break on way home.

In Pa the state inspection weed these out . You can't legally get inspection if spring shakels are rusted. They don't like welded (fixed frames ) unless you use a good section to replace it.

But have fun Its not bad to swap cab ETC to a good frame . GOOD LUCK

Not really if the body and bed are good .... the frame is just another bolt in part ... a big one but at least it isn't unibody. Of course ... I wouldn't change it if here was rust on the body also.

The only time I've ever seen a frame that bad was on a 81 F350 that was used as a salt water truck on an oil field. The tank was pretty leaky so, the bed and frame were completely toast.

pest control (leaked corrosive fertilizer/pesticides), pool service (chlorine), and lawn maintenance (fertilizer and leaving grass cuttings in the bed wet) all are known to rot frames.
