"For 2003, the 6.8L SOHC Triton V-10 continues to produce 310 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. The standard 5.4L SOHC Triton V-8 is rated at 260 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque."
Can you tell a pretty big difference in the pep when comparing the V10 & the V8 ? Do you think it would be worth the difference in power when mpg is compared?
thanks

I've had both engines. I can tell you that the V10 has a lot more grunt and in all honesty, the extra two cylinders doesn't drink up that much more gas. If you're going to do any subsantial pulling or hauling, the V10 would be a good choice. Oh, I am speaking about the 2003 for the V10... more HP that year and up,
What king of mpg difference? I have a 2000 7.3 that runs pretty well with the chip I have and I know the gas chips may add around 10-12 hp so I was curious as to how peppy they were. I dont usually yow but I like the power to run around the highway.
i get 13 around town in my 5.4 and my dad gets about 10 in his 6.8...but its really hard to compare 2 different drivers...we are both fairly heavy on the foot and we both drive the same route everyday...he has a 2v v10 and i have a 3v v8...he is heavier with the CC DRW and im a SC SRW....o well i once got 13.4 outta the same route and my old man has rarely gotten over 10.5
I drive both the 2v 5.4 and the 2v 6.8. You can fell the extra power of the V10 and would want it if you are not going to do any mods to either engine. If you are going to do a lot of towing get the V10. The 5.4 averages 12.5 gpm with 9 gpm towing at full load and 14.5 gpm was my best ever. The 6.8 averages 9.5 gpm with 5 gpm towing full load and 13 gpm was the best ever. The same saying goes with the V10 as did the old 460, "It will pass every thing on the road but a gas station!"
However, if you are willing to do some mods to the 5.4 it is the best bet in town. If you check out my list of mods I did to my 5.4 and I still average 12.0 mpg. I don't use it to pull with anymore since I installed the lift and 37" tires, but around town and off-road performance has surpasses the stock V10 by far. I am sure the v10 can get mods to do the same but I haven't done any. The mods to my 5.4 have taken me to 350+ hp and 400+ ftlbs but the dyno man said they may be off and went into a long explaination of why that I didn't listen to. I am doing more mods as I speak and getting a custom program and some new real hp and torque numbers soon.
Point is that if you just want more go pedal for driving around town and off-road with the best mpg possible I would get the 5.4L and add some GOOD mods. If you want a real work horse and are not the mod kind of guy than get the V10. Or get the V10 and add mods to that to realy kick tail. HA, HA, HA!!
My V10 is averaging about 9.5 MPG's and that is combined driving. Also, I have 4.30's in my axles, so the truck has a bit more pep but probably dropped my MPG's down one mile or two per gallon. There was not a whole lot of difference between the V8 & V10 and like a few guys said, it depends on how you drive and how heavy your foot tends to be.
