Trying to get Alpine navigation unit working in my new 2008. My installer tried to use the speed sensor wire coming from the rearend but they do not work. Where can he find the correct VSS for this system to work?
Yes, the wire is in the windshield wiper harness under the hood-left rear of the engine compartment. I recall that the wire is yellow with a purple stripe but I don't have the sheet from my dealer any longer.
Thanks for the reply!
After I posted my question to you I continued rifling through countless documents and web pages when I came across this: https://www.fleet.ford.com/TRUCKBBAS/non-html/Q162.pdf . It's an electrical bulletin from Ford for companies that build bodies and do special construction type vehicles using Ford chassis. It explains what all the extra blunt-cut wires you see under the dash and hood are used for. And what do you know? There is a wire in there they named VSO. Vehicle Speed Out. And it is in the SEIC bundle of blunt-cut wires that are attached (taped) to the harness coming from the OBD2 data connector. On the 2008 diesel & gas F-2,3,4 & 550's the wire is purple/orange. On the 2008 diesel & gas E-2,3 & 450's the wire is gray/black.
Here's what it says in the vocabulary/definitions section about this wire: VSO, VS_OUT: Vehicle Speed Out. 8000 pulses per mile signal. Blunt-cut wire provided for customer access.
Sounds to me like this is the one I want. I'll find out this weekend and post the results.
There are several blunt cut wire ends on the main harness that runs through the firewall under the dash to the left of the steering wheel. From what I remember, you will have to unwrap part of the harness before you find these wires. There you will find the blunt cut Purple/Orange wire to use for VSS.
The VSS wire should be in the radio harness already. I think on the 05-07 trucks it is the grey wire with black stripe, not sure if it is the same on the 08 though.

Nothing to unwrap on my '08. The bundle is taped to the OBDII harness and the ends are exposed. Unfortunately, the purple/orange Vehicle Speed Out wire in that bundle is not the correct wire. I was getting a signal while in park and the mph reading was 3-4 mph while in park. It made the navigation completely inaccurate. I disconnected that wire, did a reset and it returned to the way it was. Which was not very accurate to begin with but much better than with the VSS wire connected to the truck's VS-Out wire.
