Looking at the new fan that they have and wondering if any one has installed one or heard any good about them. Just didn't know if it's going to be a waste of money.

I saw this in an article I read about a cummins swap in to a Super Duty.

Here's the spec page from Flex-a-lite.

I built my own electric dual fan set up over a year ago, Originally I just mounted the fans to the radiator, it worked, but I wasnt seing the cooling effect I expected! I removed the fans, built a shroud out of 18 ga galvanized sheet, mounted the fans and also cut louvers in 2 spacific areas, controled by adjustable relay with auto on for A/C. Now the truck cools great, average 195*, the A/C has never put out such COLD AIR, not only did I gain noticable horse power but also gained 2 MPG!
I have seen comparable units for as much as $500, I built mine for $150!

IIRC, the Flex fan is about $650. Pay attention to the last thing they say on the web page... if you're going to be pulling more than about 11,000 lbs, the fan is not adequate for those higher loads. They recommend GVWR max at 18,000 lbs, while our PSD's hit the 18,000-22,000 range when fully loaded.

That said, if you don't pull, or pull low load weights, it's an expensive but good option with real payback.

I would guess my toy hauler loaded is around 10,000 to 11,000 lbs, I have been very happy with the electric fans, especially after I built the custom shroud. I installed a manual water temp gauge to keep an eye on things, just in case!

I'd be interested in doing what you've done, Dad. Can you provid emore details and pics of your install? Personally, I don't really haul anything, so I'm not limited at all in that respect. I just don't want to fork out the $500-$700 to do the job. Besides, I like building things myself anyway.

I will see if I can get a decent picture this evening, its a little tight in there so Im not sure how good the picture will turn out? I removed the clutch fan and schroud, took measurements accross the radiator, used a break to bend the ends up to 90* (made a large square pan), I took some vacuum line and split it and put it the edges of the top and bottom only, Thats the only place I was concerned about gouging the plastic radiator pans. Purchased 2 high CFM fans (cant remember the #) put one at the top drivers side and the other at the bottom passengers side, I cut slits in the oposite corners and added about 4 louvers at each place. Purchased an adjustable relay with an A/C auto on relay! And to make me feel better, I also added a manual water temp guage to keep a close eye on things, I have had it installed for about 1 year now and havent had any problems, Thats about it!

My set-up is a diamond plate piece of aluminum cut to match the pre-existing shroud (which was removed). A pair of electric fans from a Mercury Villager stagger-mounted with a few louvers punched above and below.
Works great and I often tow heavy... no issues.

i haul stuff in the bed sometimes, but rarely haul anything, so a swap over to electric fans would be awesome for me!

Solid & Dad - whenever you have time to snap pics and post them, we'd all greatly appreciate it
