Gas gauge quit working

It was working, then my brother in law showed me how to take the headlight switch out and the guage quit working.I figured a wire came loose so I took the cluster off as well as I could(just pulled it back, cause I could'nt disconnect the odometer cable)I saw that the guage has two bolts sticking out the back side and I found a wire that looks as if it would just slide onto the bolt threads,so I slid it onto it and then the needle pegged out full. After thirty or so miles the needle has not moved.I have dual tanks,so I thought I should switch the wire to the other stud but nothing changed.

The same thing goes for the temperature sensor,it has the studs but no wires are present to apply to the studs. Is there something missing or am I not doing this right? I have no idea what to do,I'm just guessing

None of the studs have wires on them, is this what yours looks like?

All the connections are made through the large plug that plugs into the rear of the cluster. I would take the wire off the stud that you installed.

If you are curious about the mystery wire, give us the wire color and someone may be able to figure out where it goes.

As far as the gas gauge, I would do a test to see what's possibly wrong with it. I would put the cluster back together, and then go back to one of the tanks that is easiest to get to the sending unit. Switch the dash selector switch to that tank, and take the wire off the sending unit. With the key in run, and someone watching the gauge, ground the sending unit wire. The gauge should peg in one direction. Then take the wire off ground and let it hang in the air. The gauge should swing full scale and peg in the opposite direction. If this test works, then the gauge and the wiring are ok all the way back to the tank, and there is something wrong with the sending unit.

I have also found on my truck that the dah selector switch can get dirty. Take the switch and move it back and forth rapidly about 10 times and see if the gauge starts working again.
