Stupid me battery backwards

Well I was swapping batteries to try and start up the truck and the one from my car had the terminals on the other side well the alternator has been replaced and the truck will fire up but the alt light is on and it is not charging the battery readings at the battery do not go up to 13 when the truck is started there is good continuity between the batt and the alternator but i don't read 13+ right at the alternator is this the voltage regulator fried or do i need to dig into fusible links? Any help would be appreciated

I had a friend hook his batt. up backwards (should not have the same colored batt. cables) and it fried the voltage regulator, took us a while to figure it out because the batt. had a constiant drain on it; we were looking else were. regulators are cheap I would replace it.

I think that is the next thing to be replaced they are like 15 dollars and if that isn't it i will start wire tracing for the fusible links there really isn't much more in these old charging systems

6 volt = positive ground / 12 volt = negative ground

At one time, the 12v cables were different colors, Black = negative; Red = positive.

6 volt positive ground battery cables used one coated cable, one strap cable.
