I have a 2004 6.0 psd that has developed a squeel when turning left or right. When i turn the wheel to the left it makes the noise but then stops as soon as the movement of the sterring wheel stops. Same for the right. The fluid is at the correct mark and there are no leaks. I was under the truck while my wife turned the steering wheel back and forth and it sounds like it is coming from the pump but not 100% sure. Any ideas? Thanks, Todd
How many miles do you have on it? I've had a similar issue with my 92 F150 that turned out to be the serpentine belt. Once I deglazed the pulleys and installed a new belt...the squeal went away. My 250 only has 45K on it and have not had this issue.
I had the same issue on my 2003 6L PSD at 70,000km and it was the belt that needed tightening. Now at 112,000km it is starting to show itself again but this time it includes leaks from my power steering pump. It is becoming harder to turn my steering wheel at a dead stop. My slightly over sized 35" tires and levelling kit certainly is making my pump and steering work harder.
Ford has gone cheap with the current pumps and so if you are replacing the pump strongly consider going to the saginaw pump. I ordered mine from AGR and here is the link http://www.agrperformance.com/informationcenter.html. I can't recal how much I paid but in the +200 magnatude. It is easy to find the pump from other suppliers but the trick is it needs a custom bracket and I only know AGR to make one but it also needs a minor adjustment which the supplier provide step by step instructions at the bottom of the web link I referred to.
Many of the ford guys in my area are going this route as these provide approx. 20% more flow and pressure than the OEM and has significantly longer life. For some reason ford use to install the saginaw in the older models and went cheaper these days. You will be pleased with the better performance and durability of the saginaw pump if you need replacing.
This might sound strange but my 03 SD was making the grinding noise too, took it in and found out it was the ball joints. I also had the pump flushed. Took them flushing it two times to get all it all cleaned out.
Thanks for the info, I haven't checked the belt. If it was the belt wouldn't it squeel all the time? Mine only does it when I turn the steering wheel one way or the other and then stops when I stop turning the wheel. It does look like the front end needs to be greased, at least the boots look empty. How hard is it to get to and change the Serpentine belt on one of these beast? It looks like you would have to take half of the front end off to even get at the pump. I have just over 50,000 miles on this truck. Thanks, Todd
I just ordered the saginaw p-pump and expecting it any day. I never changed my belt becasue my service tech told me at 70,000km that he tighted and serviced it for free and advised that he expects me back before 100,000km. He was pretty close as my power steering is leaking at 112,000km.
I am to busy to do the work myself but I will ask my mechanic buddy that wil do the install in the next few weeks what is required and the time involved and post the results.
I re-examined the noise today and it seems more like a hissing sound instead of a squeel. But again just when I turn the steering wheel, and then stops when the wheel is not moving. The belt is tight. Any other ideas? Thanks, Todd
With as few miles as you have on that belt I can't image that the belt is your issue...but I don't know where else to point. I assume your fluid level is good?
The fluid level was a little low. Right at the fluid low mark on the dip stick when cool. I can't imagine that it would cause it to make the noise that it is making. By the way I started the truck up today and it seems to be getting louder. Bad pump? What do you guys think?
I'm thinking that the pump is bad so I'm going to replace it. Does anyone have experience doing it that can offer some guidance on this area? It looks a little difficult to get to. Any step by step guidance would be appreciated. I would like to do it my self but not appossed to takeing it to a dealer.
Im noticing a faint squeak when i turn my wheel as well, ill be talking to the tech when i bring it in for a 60,000 mile service ( wont be for a few more weeks, had to refinance the house to pay for the service, lol)
