Funny noise
Hey guys,
hoping I can get some help here. I have a 2002 edge 2wd 3.0L with 60,000 mi. Recently I noticed a funny noise coming from somewhere in the rear end. It isn't constant, but rather is more noticable when under load. If it were a bearing I would be hearing it all the time right? Also if I push on the box laterally there is a clunking sound. I know that this is very vague, but any info/possiblilities would be helpful. I just noticed this this weekend so haven't had a chance to look. I'm thinking possibly something in the rear drum? u joint? bearing? rear end?

If you have a bearing problem in the rear end it can make noise under load and be quite when not under load. This is common with pinion bearings.I have seen them both ways noisy underload quite when coasting I have also seen them quite under load and make noise when coasting. Ujoints can also do this but there is usually some vibration when they start to go bad.
