460 project for u
how can i get the ultamate torque beast out of a 88 efi 460 zf and fairly good gas mileage(for a 460). with out stroking it. and not spending an arm and leg. u see i am an 18 year high school student graduating june 20 finally, and i have 2k in the bank and get about 200 to 300 a week at work, i hope to swap it into my bronco by summers end. what should i do.

the fuelie 460s already have the straight up timing set. what kind of bronco are you swapping it into? if its an older one youre probably better off swapping to a carb top end from a junkyard (heads and intake) and then just do a good port job on the carb heads and throw some nice headers on there... and while youve got the engine torn apart, throw a nice cam and lifters in (something around 200-215 duration @.050 and about .520 lift should be good) and throw an edelbrock 600 cfm carb on there for mileage... #1406. thats about as good as you can get without digging into the shortblock.

First, do research on this website, there's been some (though not as much as carb stuff) threads about EFI upgrades. Second, everything I've read (not personal experience) says that Ford's 460efi's came with straight up timing, so that would be a waste. I'm in the process of stroking my 460efi and will be installing into an 88 bronco as well, and am doing A LOT of research before making any big purchases. For what you are doing, I would start with some of the more common stuff, bigger air element, cut out the air horn, headers are probably the biggest bolt on gain, improve the rest of your exhaust system, chip, some say adjustable fuel regulator can help, injectors may help (I'll have a used set of 24 lbs available soon). After that, I would try and find a set of 'F' heads (I believe they were from 92-96 or close to that), they have larger valves, a smidge smaller cumbustion chamber and a little bit better runners then the E heads your 88 has. Have them worked over, home ported or ship out. After all of that, you could go the electronics route, MSD box, coil, wires, etc. some of that will eventually take up your $2k, so good luck!
