Just wanted to thank the forum for its contribution to my education concerning my "new" 85 F250 and to report that the sloppy steering condition that I inherited was significantly improved by a modest 1/8 -1/4 tightening of the adjustment acrew in the steering gear box.
I did the adjustment in small increments as recommended, and as mentioned above, very little adjustment was required to accomplish a meaningful improvement in reducing the annoying free-play in the steering wheel.
I searched the forums for threads relating to gear box and loose steering and was educated about the numerous conditions that can contribute to the condition; rag joint, worn gear box, tie rods, ball joints, etc.
I checked the amount of "slop" in the gear box by moving the steering wheel from side to side to determine that the box had a lot of looseness in it. (I understand that some is required, so you have to adjuct carefully and in moeration.)
