i wish u didnt say that about spending a couple days mating up the drive notches and ears...the trans manufacturer recomended to just add 5 qts in the pan and fire it up 'dry' since the converter was already installed and the possibilty of messing up the seal...if i dont have to then i prefer not to
I have installed many transmissions with dry converters and have added a quart of oil to some, it doen't make any difference. Put 5-6 quarts of transmission oil in the pan, start the engine, add oil til you get to 10-11 quarts then check the oil with the dipstick. Fill to the crosshatched area on the stick, run the transmission through all gear positions and recheck the level then fill to just short of full.
wast there an episode on monster garage when jesse james was in iraq building a blown hummer and the trans took a dump because the guy didnt put atf in the torque converter
If you are installing a dry TC and transmission. You pour in 2 gallons of tranny fluid then start vehicle place it in reverse to let pump put fluid in TC and then go back to neutral and check. Some of the larger TC hold 11 to 16 pts. When i put my tranny and new TC thats what i did and the truck is still kicking.
You will be surprized on how much you will be able to put in. I had a C6 and thats what i put in and then started it. If you do it slow it will fit. After its in then start and put in reverse so pump can pull it in the TC. When ever you change the filter and pan gasket you put in a gallon then start and check. A C6 holds around 12 3/4 qts when dry. I learned the hard way and it was $$$$$$$$.
what do u mean u learned the hard way? did u drive with a couple quarts low or if it runs dry for a moment does it go south? the pump only works in reverse?
I learned by getting a tranny fluid bath. I didn't put it in when engine was off i started it first then poured in the fluid and it came out just as fast as it could. It was a learning experment for me and a comedy show for the rest of them.
