Hey guys i'm havin a little trouble getting the rear drive shaft off. i took the 4 bolts off the C clamps that hold the u-joint to the yoke, but the actual C clamps are really stuck on, i've sprayed a ton of liquid wrench on and let it sit, and then i took a hammer and tried tapping them out, but no movement. I even tried giving it a good wack to try and loosen them up.
Has anyone had this problem, can anyone help me. i need to replace theis u-joint, it's really bad, and it needs to be done for a safety.
Try a pry bar behind the joint. It should come of easy with the hammer if all the bolts are out. It may be in a bind. Be sure ya got one rear wheel off the ground, the rig blocked so it can't roll and the tranny in neutral. When it is out of the bind it should come apart.
Like he said, make sure the wheels are blocked, and the tranny is in neutral. You should be able to rock the driveshaft back and forth, there should be no strain on it.
Some WD40 or PB blaster on the U bolts. Than tap on it with a rubber or plastic hammer to keep from buggering the threads. Maybe a piece of wood as an insulator between the hammer and U Bolt end with treads on it. if ya don't have a plastic hammer. I have also run the nut back on so it is flush with the end of the threads so when ya try to tap it out it won't bugger the threads.
I'd just see if you could fit a large screwdriver or prying instrument between the u-joint and rear end yoke. You should be able to pry them apart. I did it that way on the diesel. I thought it was stuck for sure with all the rust and all.
