I am currently an owner of a 2000 f-150 4x4 5.4L xlt ext cab short bed, the truck has been a lot of fun but i really hate driving it as my commuter b/c it only gets 13mpg at best. i have a 6" lift on it with 37" tires i have a blast with this truck but am looking for a full sized truck that gets around 20 mpg is this possible hence looking towards a psd. but i really don’t know a whole lot about the psd. i would like anyone’s input on what size / year / sb / lb ext cab or quad cab psd they have and what actual mileage they get out of it. this will help me a lot, also any suggestions on the 6.0 or the 7.3 it sounds like the 7.3 is the motor of choice but unfortunately what i have came across when looking all have close to 200,000 miles on them, any input is appreciated!
Thanks!
Few PSDs will se 20 mpg. A decent range when not towing is more like 14-18, with a few managing a bit more than 18. The heavier the truck, 4x4, auto, dually, all will lower mpg.
One major difference between the 7.3 and 6.0 is that the 6.0 has quite a bit more power stock to stock, or chipped to chipped. A chipped 7.3 will keep up with a stock 6.0, however. If you find a 6.0 that hasn't had a past history of problems, go for it! This goes for the 7.3, as well.
I'd also suggest reading up in the 7.3 and 6.0 forums. You'll learn a lot in a short time by just reading the daily threads.
I've got a F250 with the 6.0. It's a 2003, crew, 4x4, shortbed, with the automatic. I get 14.9 on the daily drive and 14.6 towing about 6K.
Dont' be afraid of the 6.0s. Run an OASIS report on any diesel you want to look at. This will tell you what warranty work has been done to the truck/powertrain. If the report shows a lot of engine problems, I'd pass it up and find one like I did....no engine problems at all.
Welcome to the board Rookie, I am in the same "boat" as you, thinking of trading in the gasser for a PSD. I am looking for high numbers too but don't think they're out there in figures we would like to see. I am also going for all of the goodies that are going to drag those numbers down; as ryaneverk2 said.... 4x4, dually, long bed, auto.... so good luck with your search. I hope you find what you are looking for.
thanks for those who have replied the information is helpfull, i guess i need to figure out how to navigate around this site a little more to take advantage as to what is here, thnaks again
