hello, I recently bought a 1970 f-250 sport custom. the guy I bought it from said it had a 302, and I was like ok cool. well the engine had a 2bbl, and I wanted to convert to 4bbl. so I went out and bought a whole intake setup and everything....well when I pulled the intake manifold off, I noticed that in the middle of the block, the numbers 289 were molded in. now its a good thing the 289, and 302 are basicly the same, or I would have had to get another intake manifold...
and yes i continued to put it together....
But, its got me thinking....which one do I REALLY have. Its starting to get on my nerves. so is there any way to identify a 302 verses a 289?? any serial numbers or any numbers on the block that i can look for?? and special bolt patterns??

The first year an F Series truck used a 302 was in 1969. The 1969/70's used the same intake manifold = C4AZ-9424-J. This is the SAME intake manifold used on 1964/68 289 and 1968/70 302 passenger cars. The 302 engine was introduced in the spring of 1968.
NOTE: The only F Series that came with a 302 from 1969 thru 1979 were F100/150's.
NO F250 had a 302 till the 1980's.

At the end of 289 production and beginning of 302 production there were some 302s built with blocks intended for 289s, thus so marked. If you remove a head you can find out for sure by measuring the stroke. The 289 is 2.87" (about 2-7/8"), while the 302 is 3.00". You should be able to positively determine with a measuring tape, by measuring a piston at BTDC, which stroke you have.
While all the 4V intakes Number Dummy mentioned may have the same part number, they have casting numbers which changed pretty well every year. Thus the 1964 intake starts with C4OE, a 1966 with C6OE....
