Yes platinum plugs are the best for there intended use. mostly used in newer high intensity multi spark applications. For these trucks a copper core plug is best.

A waste of money on a 30 year old engine, if that's what's in there. Motorcraft's are fine.

There is no substantiated performance claim of improvement using platinum in our old trucks. They may last longer, however. The copper replacement is my choice; a quality plug with a copper core.

It really doesn't matter what year truck it is.
It has nothing to do with the body styling/trim,etc related year differences

It depends more on fuel quality air quality and Barometric pressure/ignition used

It would be more of an engine topic or GAD related.

The topic is about spark plugs and how they compare with each other brand .
It is Not 73-79 truck specific related.

Please move these Off forum topic threads to their proper place.

The General automotive forum is the BEST place for this thread.

Common sense...

To the OP try this page.

the best plug to run is one similar to stock original. autolite or motorcraft are best. they are the oe plug and last and perform the best. forget the plugs pushed by the big box retailers. i worked 12 years in autopart sales, companies always want you to push a certain brand of plug. bosch is great if you have a volkswagon, but not in a ford.

as a part sales manager for autozone I can honestly say that bosch plugs are the worst on the planet!!! Over half of them sold end up back in our return bin. But using autolite or delco platinums is a very good choice. They run only a buck more per plug and the fact that platinum requires less energy to fire, it gives the rest of your ignition system alot more life. Plus platinum will out live other conductors because it is a very high quality metal.

Platinum plugs are not the plug of choice for older engines. Platinum tips run hotter, so pre-ignition is going to be an even bigger problem, even at a lower heat range. Lowering the heat range makes the fouling problem even worse. Older engines are designed to have oil that passes through the valve guides, and past the rings, and the little tiny electrode is very easy to foul. With any amount of oil in the cylinder, the possibility of plug failure is very high. While less voltage is required to pass through the electorde, a fouled plug is a fouled plug, and will not fire.
While the conductor can outlive other materials, if it can't fire because of the possibility of fouling from an old carb, or oil in the cylinder, you are going to be removing them very soon.
Copper is the way to go...

The small conductor problem is what makes bosch a terrible plug. Basically it looks to have the diameter of a wire brush bristle and if that wasn't bad enough, it doesn't even pretrude past to ceramic insulator. The Autolite platinum nearly resembles a copper core electrode except for a little bit of taper at the tip. So far I have not had any problems running the Autolite platinums in my 73 360. My points are not wearing near as fast as the used to. What 75 F350 states does make sense. Especially when refering to the bosch design.
