Thought i might get some more advice before i tear into it. My transfer case won't engage I can hear a relay clicking when i push the button but no engagement. This vehicle has been setting for a while thought there might be some corrosion or rust somewhere Any advice is appreciated.
On the transfer case is a little electric motor that's supposed to switch it..that usually rusts up or gets dirt in it..common problem..then it won't work.
Yep, you'll probably have to disconnect the wiring harness from the motor and remove it and clean everything up (WD-40 or PB Blaster works great -- after it's cleaned, you may want to put some graphite lubricant or silicone lubricant in there to keep it from rusting up as easily again, I forget what Ford recommends), put it back in and test it. If it still doesn't want to work, the motor may be toast.
Okay lawnboy Help and Kernel both know a lot more than me about fixing trucks so please listen to them befor me. I just wanted to let you know that my electric t-case had a simmilar problem. It wouldn't disengage from 4W-Low; I would push the button but all I got was a clicking noise.
(I had switched from 4-High to 4-Low while pulling some one off a tellephone pole. There was a lot of tenssion on the chain but I wasn't getting enough power so I switched right from 4-High to 4-Low while in revese. I pulled the guy off the pole but then when I tried to switch out of 4-Low only clicking)
I didn't even think about looking at the t-case. When I got the BII home I just tore (litteraly) into the push button switch assembly mounted on the headlinner. The circutbored for the switch was fried; I got that fixed and the electric t-case has worked every time sense.
John, thanks for the input, I didn't even think about the switch itself! That could also be a possibility, especially if a hung motor caused the switch / circuit board to fry. Best bet is to check everything out -- start with the simple stuff (switch) and work your way down to the shift motor. Again, John, thanks for your input... it would have not been fun had he taken everything else apart and put in a new motor and still had no joy on it being fixed.
I busted my switch housing trying to get it down from the headliner. My Chilton’s manual didn't even talk about the electric switch and I didn't see any way to get it down with out busting it. Of course after I got it down I saw how simple it would have been if I had only known how. If I remember correctly there are some screws that can be accessed by removing the push in map light cover switches. It's been awhile since I have even been in that BII its got "stuff" piled all around and over and under it in my garage right now and I still need to get the ring gear on the fly wheel replaced but if ay one runs into any brick walls trying to remove their pushbutton switch assembly email me (John.Miller@atk.com) before you break yours and I'll check mine out again.
