everyone talks about the gains you receive from a chip but there has to be some drawbacks to it. how much more stress does it put on the drive line( tranny, tranfer case, rearend). is a chip worth the excess stress on these components? also what things should i look for when trying to find a chip that is right for me?
The drawback is higher exhaust heat with the higher HP programming such as the Diablo 78HP or Superchips 80HP. With the higher temps your towing limit is reduced unless you are willing to put in a high flow exhaust system and downpipe. With the lower HP settings (54HP and 60HP) towing limits aren't reduced and in some case exhaust temps are actually lower than stock, depending on your ECU code.
so are you saying that if i put the 54 hp chip in my truck the drivetrain will not strees anymore than what it is being stressed right now with the truck being stock.
Naturally, anytime you add horsepower it gets transferred to the drivetrain and then to the wheels. If by stress, you mean "wear and tear", no, its all in how you treat your vehicle. Chipped or unchipped, if you abuse the truck it won't last, if you don't it will.
thanks, that helps out alot. now which type of chip would you recommend i know the 54 horse does not have any limiting factors that come with it like trailer wieght. which is good but i also want the most for my money. i have read into the programs that you can switch between the stock program and the performance program. would you recommend one of these for someone that is going to be pulling a trailer 1 or twice a week that wieghts 8-10000 pounds. PLEASE, help me out as much as possible thanks
Your best bet is to go with the Diablo Delta. For a few bucks more you get both 54HP and 78HP. Pretty much two programs for the price of one. Use the 78HP when unloaded and the 54HP when loaded.
