99 Ranger problem, need help!!

I have a 99 ford ranger w/ automatic transmission. Yesterday I was at a stop light and when I went to press the gas all the truck did was revv, like it was in park, but I was in drive. I had to take off in 2nd gear, but while I was driving I shifted back into drive and the truck seemed fine. But everytime I came to a stop I would have to take off in 2nd. I have a feeling that its my tranny. Can anyone tell me whats wrong with my truck? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to FTE.

Is this the 4, or 5 speed auto tranny????

Might be hepful to know how many miles you have on this ride & where you are on past & present scheduled maintenance, especially tranny fluid & filter changes.

Are you using the specified fluid & is your tranny fluid up to the correct level, when checked as specified in your owners manual?????

Have you been having any tranny shifting problems prior to this event????? Have you had any tranny, repairs or service done prior to the problem?????

Hey Thanks!!! I have the 4 speed tranny and I'm almost at 128,000 miles. I bought the truck used about 2 1/2 years ago, I can't say that I've done any tranny maint on the truck. I have done some maint, tune up, muffler, exhaust pipes, regualr oil change, air filter, transfer case oil change, you know just some minor work. I haven't had a chance to check my tranny fluid, I know the truck needs to be warm to check the levels and I really dont want to drive the truck at all, I guess I could just let it idle for a little bit huh? I haven't had any major work done on the truck or any major problems.

Well then the first order of buisness is to get the tranny fluid level checked right away & also let us know the state the fluid is in. What color is it, when a drop is put on a white blotter paper & what does the blotter drop look like after it soaks in????? Also what does the fluid smell like?????

With this many miles on the vehicle I'd try to find out when the last tranny flud & filter change was. The Dealer should be able to pull the vehicles Ford supplied service history up, on Oasis. If you know the former owner give them a call & extract as much info as you can.

If the vehicle is used to haul, or tow, the fluid & tranny filter should be changed every 30K miles.

If you don't haul or tow, they're it's due to be changed at 60K intervials, so it's due for a fluid & filter change, no matter whats been done previously.

Before you change it, or have it changed, let us know what state the fluid is in.
