I had a similar problem on a Bronco I had. It would kill a reman starter after about 5 to 10 starts. It turned out the thrust surface on my main bearings was shot and allowing the flywheel to move in and out, destroying the drives. I doubt this is your problem, but it is something to look at.
hey man, that does kinda sound maybe what I got. I haven't seen it on the flywheel but my crank pulley goes crazy at idle. It doesn't shake anything, but it looks like it's wobbling around. Now maybe it's just because my entire brain is wobbling around, but I swear it is.
Check your flywheel for warpage. Never seen it until last w/e my buddy pulled out the flywheel cuz the starter was grinding in certain spots warped like a frisbee.
Well guys, I splurged. Picked up a valucraft reman for $32 and a new starter cable for $7. Damn things fine now. Doesn't sound like **** and fires up every time [well, turns over every time lol].
I do have a stupid question. What kind of trans fluid do I put in this thing?
go'l dang, buy a starter. then again, i like to figure stuff out too, even if it's in the end not worth the effort i put into it, but the grinding, is it possible to have left your flywheel shim out?
That's what I was thinking too, but this design shiming would only put the starter gear further back from the flywheel. So, I don't think it could have been shimmed. And it was just crappy starter problems. The cheapest of the cheap valucraft one works fine.. it sounded a bit off [a lot better though] the first day, but now it sounds fine. But when the motor is hot and hasn't cooled less than 10min, the starter is very weak. So far it's worked on the first try, but I think I need to get a heatshield because I have headers and they are very close to both the trans lines and that starter.
I am very good at taking the cheap way out only to have it kick me in the ***, as well . No biggie, no turning back, and it's done. That's what is important.
