Question Engine gaskets to be replaced.......????

I've had an oil leak and the dealership placed the dye in the oil. Today they told me that I need the front and rear engine gaskets replaced as well as the CAC tubes. So I asked the service writer if he meant head gaskets and he said no. I asked if he meant the valve cover gaskets and he said no. I asked because I don't know what engine gaskets are.

So sorry for the novice question, but what are the Engine/motor gaskets in the front and rear??? Does this seem like a legit diagnosis?

If this were your truck, would you allow them to replace these on your truck? My truck works perfectly and I don't want to screw anything up. Do they have to pull the motor or take the cab off for this?

I appreciate any help on this subject as I'm thinking about telling them to leave it alone for now.

dc3655,

There are Front and Rear covers on the motor, they cover the front of the engine (the water pump installs in this) and the rear gear train (Cam, Crank, High pressure pump) respectively.

One thing that concerns me a little is they said that both the Front & Rear covers are leaking ( one or the other okay, but Both is a little strange) and they also said the CAC tubes are leaking, i wonder if the CAC tubes are leaking and the oil is running down the front & rear of the motor making it appear as though the front and rear engine cover gaskets are leaking.

You may want to tell them just to change the CAC tubes and clean off all the oil, then monitor it for any other leaks. Also how well do you know this dealership and their diesel techs. Is the tech properly trained & Qualified on the 6.0?

Blackhat, thanks for the explanation. I thought it rseemed kind of strange and I was thinking the same thing: have them replace the CAC tubes and go from there. I don't know this dealership (Berge Ford in Mesa, AZ), nor do I know if their techs are qualified.
Since they aren't going to pull my engine or take the cab off (at least that's what they said), then I can get this done anytime.....or just leave it alone because it really doesn't bother me. I have a perfect running truck and the last thing I want is to open up a litiny of problems.
Also, does it make sense that they can do this without pulling the motor or taking the cab off? Just a newbie question.

dc3655,

I have never been a big fan of Berge Ford, but "hotroddsl" knows some of their techs and swears by them, drop him a PM and ask him who to talk to there. My preferred Ford diesel service department is Sanderson Ford in Glendale, they are the Medium/Heavy duty FMC dealer and repair facility in the valley.

Talk to "hotroddsl" and if it was me i think i would try the CAC tubes first as both engine covers being bad at the same time is long odds.

Good luck

Since I did a search and couldn't find either front or "rear engine gasket", is this the same thing as the "Rear Main Seal" that so many have had fixed?

They did finally say that the motor will have to be pulled, so I guess the only good thing that could come from this is the opportunity to get some ARP Headstuds installed.....just trying to stay positive.

The Front & Rear engine covers are exactly what i described in my first post. The Rear Main seal is the, crank shaft seal, (these are way down the list on actual cause of a leak). Look at the 6.0 bible (link in the Tech folder) for pictures of the Front & Rear Covers.

Did you get a hold of hotroddsl?

Also if it was me, i would have them just fix the CAC tubes, clean all the oil off the engine and monitor it.

Blackhat, yes, he wrote me an email and I need to call him later (I'm currently out of the country).
I'll have to see what they say about doing the ARP headstuds, but the other day they said that they would do them while the motor was out, so now I just need to see how much they are gonna charge. It's just a pain trying to orchestrate the dealership and the headstuds while I'm out of the country.
I do really appreciate your help. Thanks.
