A Question

I have a question. I picked up those engines in town.
Here's what I got:
75 Ford 390
80's Dodge 318
72-78 Dodge 400

They are a pretty much scrap metal. Is anything worth keeping? The 390 crank is .020 under mains and rods.

You already know my answer....
Hang on to the 390 if you can, the rest of these engines is up to you.
Any luck on the job market yet? Are you out at the farm or in Saskatoon?

The 390's been bored .030 over. 1-7 cylinders are okay but #8 is F****ed. One cylinder head is okay but that is about it.

I'm currently out at the farm and is still searching for a job. I just finished fixing the 91 F-250. I rebuilt the differential and replaced the rear gas tank.

Well since nobody wants any of the 390 parts, it's going to the scrap yard. The Dodge 400 big block might be salvagable.

Well it seems the 318 and 400 blocks are salvagable.

As for the rear axle it was hard enough. I wouldn't attempt it without a shop manual, knowledge of how rear axles are constructed and you need the proper tools.
For the Sterling 10.25 you need at least:

hydraulic bearing puller set (good luck using standard ones)
3/4 socket set
Metric socket set
Bearing race installers
1/2 torque wrench click type
1/2 torque wrench dial or beam type
torque mutliplyier
Yoke holding tool or pipe wrench
Hammers
Prybars

If you doing it while the truck is on the ground, the box has to come off.

It does sound like alot of work. I bet you saved quite abit of cash doing it yourself too though.

Save the crank and rods, they're 390 ONLY. You might consider saving the vibration damper, any and all pulleys and the cylinder heads. A few hours of labor may save $$$ down the road. The crank and rods are a must have if converting a 352/360 to a 390.

Well it's too late as I've already hauled it off, along with as Sund pickup header and a whole load of metal. The crank would have needed to have been turned another .020 under to be useable and it would have taken quite a bit of work to save the rods since the pistons are siezed and there was a cylinder ridge. I don't have any FE engines and don't plan on any in the future.
