I hope you can help!!! I have a '98 F150 4WD 4.6L... My problem started with the turn signal... when the weather is cool... sometimes... there is a faster than normal clicking noise, but no indicator light on in the panel... if I gently move the switch a little bit it ingages the indicator light and the clicking is normal. Then more recently when trying to spray washer fluid most of the time it wouldn't work but sometimes would. Just a note... when it wouldn't spray the wipers wouldn't automatically start either... if I turn the **** to turn them on, they would, but just pressing the switch wouldn't start them. Now the intermitent wiper speed is erratic... it works but the wiper speed is unpredictable and changes with no change to the switch. I can live with these problems, but I am concerned that eventually the wipers won't work at all!!!!
I think that it's the multi-function switch, but my question is... is there a way to clean it, or is it most probably toast, or do you think that I have relay problems???
Yes, these trucks are notorious for their Multifunction switch malfunctioning. Many people have taken apart the steering column and cleaned the switch with great results, while many other people just replace the switch. Just clean the contacts and see if that works...all it takes is a little time
I am a newbie to this, but I think I can follow directions on how to remove the ignition switch, column cover, etc... and this will sound like a stupid question but is there anything that I should be specially careful of... ie... are there any parts that could slip out of any of the components to be removed if turned the wrong direction?
yes my brother had the same problem on his 97 and he just replaced the whole switch...it took him about 20 minutes.....i now bought a 97 as well and am having the problem...as soon as i cough up the $85CAD that ford wants for it i will be changing mine as well....i cant be bothered to take it apart and clean it just to get it all back together and find out it still doesn't work...i will get it done right the first time with a new switch assembly.
I replaced mine with NAPA's version and have had no trouble since, eventually your lights will start to go out when you switch from high to low or visa versa. They run around $60 at NAPA. There is nothing to screw up while removing it.
