none of the catalogs or literature i have available too me at this time has the info im needing now . the flatty in my 53 has one bent valve and one valve that the guide has been pushed out . what i need to know is the diameter of the guide , and nope dont own one darn micrometer , and if this was normal for these flatties as i am hoping they make an oversize guide as it is "loose" when you put that valve in . now im pff to pull the left head to check all of them on that side !
My Shop Manual says mfg. min. valve stem diameter.
exhaust 0.3410 inch
intake 0.3415 inch
Clearance between valve and guide. for exhaust max. 0.005 inch
for intake max. 0.004 inch
Hope this helps, sorry you are having so much trouble with the '53
ain't no trouble just par for the course with an old truck thats been sitting . heck it ran and ran great save for the dead cylinder with the bent valve and the noise from the other . somehow they destroyed and knocked loose the retaining clips which were laying in the galley . just wanna fix it rightso we can depend on it and obviously do no damage . does your book give the diameter of the guides themselves ? thats what im lookin' for .
nope i haven't gotten a new one ordered yet the ol' one that got pushed out fit's loose . was gonna try and find an oversize one if need be , but i'm gonna order one and give it heck . it'd be such a shame to have to take it down and go through it as i already have a wish list of parts !! boy the wife would love that one !
Being as it's not a moving part I don't think the fit to the block is critical. The seal should keep it centered and prevent valve stem wear. After a few thousand miles it will be carboned up and sealed real well.
I don't know about the 53 engine but the exhaust guides in my 50 engine didn't have a grove for the seal ring. All I could find for replacements were interchangeable with the intake guides and had the seal ring grove. I got mixed opinions as to if a seal should be put in the exhaust guide or not. My engine gasket set only came with eight seal rings. They were relatively soft rubber. I ordered more rings when I bought replacement exhaust guides. They were harder rubber. I put those in the exhaust.

I'd agree, if it is just a sliding fit, and doesn't wobble. It is also held in place by the valve spring, I'd just worry about proper valve seating if it has any wobble at all.
has a bit of a wobble but i wasn't to concerned but others whom i know and are sae certified master technicians were . i kinda figured it would be fine with a retaining clip and spring holding it in place , yet if figured i would ask the obviuos and see what all of you who own and drive them had to say ,and i would order a slightly oversize one if it didn't require removal af the flatty for machining . thanx again and im sure i'll have more crazy questions .
