Hello, I have a 1998 Ranger Super Cab 4x4 with 72,000 miles. Just in the last week it has developed a very noticible creaking/moaning sound from the front end when hitting a bump or crack in the pavement. Mostly noticible at slow speeds like pulling up to a stop sign. I can also feel a little bit of looseness in the steering wheel when hitting bumps at slow speeds. Last summer I replaced both tie rod ends so I don't think the noise is coming from them. I can't find anything loose under the front end. Anybody have any ideas?
Also, worn ball joints could make noise - and cause loose steering. Jack the front end off the ground, stick a long board or pipe beneath the tire, and horse it around while viewing the ball joints and other pivots, for play/looseness.
Frame member/bracket joint rivets can occasionally loosen and make noise, too. Maybe have somebody bounce the truck while listening to various areas with a long screwdriver held to the ear (or a mechanics' stethoscope), to isolate the source of the noise.
I am getting the same noise, traced it to control arm bushings, those are gonna wait a while. Also just failed safety inspection for a "loose driver's side front wheel". Looked at it close and the boot on the lower ball joint is torn up, so I am guessing thats the one. Thats getting fixed this weekend.
