Unit Bearing/Hub Assembly

3 questions here:

Are the Unit Bearing and Hub Assembly the same thing on our trucks?

Is replacing the Unit Bearing/Hub Assembly a DIY type project for the driveway? I'm by no means a mechanical genius but I can turn a wrench here and there.

And lastly if it is something that I can do in the driveway where would be the best place to pick one up on the internets.

Well that's good VERY good news. I was on the phone with my mechanic today and he said that I would have to replace my right hand side unit bearing. He also said that the part would cost me around 480 bucks which I thought was waaaay to much, we didn't even get into labor estimates. I found some hub assemblys online today for around 300 which sounded more inline with what I've read on this site. Looks like I'll be spendin' some time in the driveway next weekend.

To replace it, take off the tire, take off the brake caliper mount bracket, take off the rotor, take off the hub lock, then under the hub lock there is a snap ring in there take it off, and take out the round washer and thrust washer. There are 2 round washers and one trust washer. The thurst washer goes in the middle of the two. After you have all of that off, on the opposite side of the knuckle you will see 4 nuts. You might want to start spraying those nuts down with rust breaker now. Take those 4 nuts out, and take out the ABS sensor(if equipped). Then after the 4 nuts out, the bearing will pull out. It may take some force but it will come out.

the only thing John didn't tell you was make sure the new unit bearing comes with new studs, removing the old studs and installing them in the new unit is a major PITA, don't ask me how I know.
