Pump It Up
California Desert Truck. Rust-Free, dipped and blasted, blocked and primered. Ready for me. (I do everything except body-work) For the record, my Wife of 33 years loves '48-'50s and she's more excited than I am.
After reading the Toyota Power Steering installation link a hundred times, I decided to try it. I scored the correct Box on E-Bay, have a GM Tilt Column. I'll have no problem welding and fabbing up my own mount brackets and stuff.
The question I have is the Pump..... Do I need to adapt a Toyota Pump to whatever Engine I end up using or, will Detroit pumps work ?
Anybody have any experience with this ?
Thanks.

The toyo box has 2 different sized fittings. There is a place called GottaShow (do a google search) that makes some great power steering lines but they are a bit pricey.

I've never built a car with P/Steering before but as I get older, the comfort requirement is sneaking up on the other priorities. Next thing you know I'll be wanting to install Vintage Air...... But not yet.......
Good news on the Caddie pump working. I think some GM pumps caused problems on the Mustang Rack set ups. Something about too much pressure.
We have a company is San Diego called "Hose Pros". They will build you any hose you need. They even have Mobile Trucks that will come to your house and swage your stuff on-site. My guess is they support a lot of Tractor/Earthwork companies and such given all the hoses they use.
What I did on mine was take the Caddy power steering pressure hose which had a length of hard line approx 8" long at the pump end. I cut it down and kept approx 4" of it. The I cut apart a metric toyota pressure hose and removed the flare nut. I slipped this onto the cut down Caddy hard line and reflaredthe steel tubing giving me a short piece of hard line with a standard male fitting that fit the GM pump and a metric male fitting on the other end.
A trip to the wrecking yard with a focus on the foreign section yeilded a toyota power steering pressure hose with a male fitting on one end (that goes to the box) and a female fitting on the other end. Now I had all I needed. I cannot remember the year or model of the car I got the power male/female power steering hose from but they are fairly common.
The return line is easy, just cut down the original toyota reuturn hose which will leave you with a chunk of hose with a male flare fitting on one end to attach to the box and a loose end that is secured with a hose clamp at the pump.
I think the toyo box takes a 17mm flare nut and a 16mm flare nut, don't quote me on that but I know they are different by just a little bit. Alot of the problems with the toyo box comes from the fittings coming out of the box interfereing with the exhaust. I think someone makes a low profile right angle fitting but I don't know who. I know some of the guys here have gotten some really nice stainless hoses from Gottashow (http://www.gottashow.com/ps_hose_kits.php)
Good luck with it
Bobby
