Angry fuel shortage

I have an 84 F-250 with a 460. I've been having trouble getting fuel to the carburetor. The tank has fuel in it and when I disconnected the line mid-way near the dual tank switch, nothing came out. Previously, when the fuel pump went bad and I unhooked that line, fuel ran out none stop until I plugged it. I've blown out all of the hard lines with compressed air and replaced the rubber lines. I dropped the tank and replaced the screen. I put on a new fuel filter, as well. I hooked the pump up to a gas can, cranked the engine, and it pumped fuel out of the can. Then, I hooked the the pump up to the tank and cranked. Fuel spurted out. However, when I hooked it all together, no gas got to the carburetor. I, then, unhooked the line at the carburetor and nothing comes out when I crank. The fuel pump seemed to work when tested before but now it doesn't. What do you think? Could air in the lines be a problem and, if so, what should I do? Is it just a goofy fuel pump?

Have you checked to see if the return valve is not stuck open? Have you checked it past the switch over valve?

I wondered about a return line. There is no return to that middle tank. The only connections are the fuel line, the wire for the gas gauge, and the vent. Would a return line go to the rear tank? I don't use that one. Where would the return line originate and where should it end? Thanks for the quick post and great advice!

You should have a return line to both tanks. They return to the switch over valve then the tanks. That is how the return is routed to the correct tank. Without a return line & electric pumps, you will burn most factory type pumps out. Because they get hot without a continuous flow. There should be a valve just before the carb that returns. Those valves are only available from Ford and aren't cheap. You can just buy a brass tee with 5/16" gas hose nipple and route a return to the change-over valve, then there should be 2 ports to frt. & back tank.

Thanks for the advice. My truck has the mechanical fuel pump, not electric. I'm at the point where I am thinking that either that valve is bad or something is wrong with the cam that it is not pushing the pump. I replaced the pump about a year ago when the diaphram went bad and filled the crank case with gasoline. I got a Carter with a lifetime warranty so I took it off and got a new one. That didn't fix the problem. I'll try the brass tee, next. Thanks, again!
