maybe try...

Check and lube the key mechanism, maybe take the covers off the streering column and check for stiction on the rod running to the ignition switch. If it's stuck try some LPS2 to free it up.

Jeeez, nevermind. I didn't read your original message properly. I thought you shut it off and then it wouldn't start.

It doesn't sound electrical, but you should check for spark anyway.
Probably fuel related. Either a clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump.
I say that because it sounds like it ran just long enough to empty the fuel bowl, but no new fuel is entering. Look down the carb throat and work the linkage, if you don't see/hear fuel squirting, that would verify my suspicions.

The way you can check the timing gear is to pull the dizzy cap off and see if the rotor spins around when you crank the motor over. The timing gear runs off the crank and spins the cam. The cam spins the dizzy. If the timing gears are old and about ready to gernade, it might have jumped a tooth or more putting your motor out of time.
The moror needs spark, gas and air. Sounds like you checked for gas. Air is e-z. Go after the spark at the spark plug and let us know whats up. I did have a bunch of build up on the inside of my dizzy cap posts that I cleaned off with my pocket knife. Check that out.

Remember, this was running just fine, then abruptly quit.
That's different than not starting, running lousy, etc.

Could be anything from no voltage to the coil, bad coil, bad ignition control module, bad ignition switch. Do you know how to test for the above?

Could be the pick up coil in the distributor.
