if anyone could help out a rookie. I am a avid motorsport enthusiast and I love the f-150 plus it fits me and my needs (I am fairly big 5'11 200+.) so rice rockets are out of the question I love the sound of american muscle.
My dad bought me a 92 F-150 5.0 with a E4OD 2WD Speed density. K&N FIPK gen 2 was installed on saturday and my exhaust was put on today. its nice and loud and it sure has more pep.....
The engine/transmission combo are very tired. I would love to either rebuild my existing 302 block, get a 351, or pick up a new block. rebuilding would be cheap, but I have no clue how to do a damn thing now I understand the stock block holds 400 hp relatively well. I am hell bent on putting a C6 in. but i would like to have a engine that can support 500 HP with reliability. and 460 is not a option.
If you are wanting to actually "put your hands on" the rebuilding of your engine,go to any autozone and buy both a "chilton's" manual for your particular application,or;and a "haynes" manual for both your engine, and year of truck you own.I have found them to be very helpful in rebuilding my engines in the past. There are many, many resources on re-building the ford engine just online.Do a google search on re-building ford small block. And of course, you have a WEALTH of knowledge right here on this site alone! Good luck, and fo'mo'power to ya!
The key word here is "reliability". You can make 500 hp with a 302, but like Jimmy said, your best bet would be an aftermarket block. The 302 block is prone to cracking the main webs, especially on post-'74 blocks, which tend to be thinner in this area, and some say a lower nickel content. A main girdle will help some, but why not start with a beefier casting to start with, just for peace of mind (and reliability)?
It's a lot easier and not much more expensive to get where you want to be, with more cubic inches. The 351 block is a better choice, and adding a stroker kit would be a major step up in power, both hp and torque.
There's no way I would want a 500 hp 302 in a daily driver, unless you enjoy doing a LOT of maintenance, plus, to be able to take advantage of the power, you'd have to keep it wound up so high, it starts to be a hassle to drive around town.
