A carb needs lower pressure fuel. It's only there to fill the float bowls, you don't want pressure that will overcome the force the float exerts against the needle on the seat. Some of the EFI pumps can work some don't. Not all have a two pump system. The single system has a high pressure pump in the tank. The pump is also wired thru the computer,(or at least my 89 Ranger's was) so you have to bypass that if you use it.

I did this on my 84 T-bird, was a TBI, not SEFI. Even so, it was a mistake. The car was much more efficient with the TBI, had much better throttle response. I used an old points style distributor with a pertronix kit, my engine is non-roller. I am using a Holley 600 and I know my tuning abilities are limited so that is part of the problem, but to this day I wish I had just put it back with the TBI instead. I did a full rebuild , .030 over, nice street cam, port matched heads and it runs pretty well, but it ran better with the EFI. If you do this swap, get a set of earlier pre-smog heads, if you ditch the egr system, you will have to plug the holes in the back of the newer heads. Also, some of the newer heads have lower compression.
Just my .02
