I have an 8" rearend off of a 72 mustang and I got the pinion gear off but I can't get the diffrential out cause I can't figure out how to get the axleshafts out. Anyone know how to do this?
8" with a drop out carrier, right? Not an integrated diff with a back cover, correct?
If so, you pull the wheels and you will see the backing plates and axle bearings are held on to the ends of the axle by 4 bolts. Pull those, then fashion a slide-hammer if you don't have a real slide hammer, and hook it on the axle shafts and you should have the axle out in a few pops. You don't have to take the brakes apart to do this. Just use a wire to hang them up out of the way.
Now if you loosened the carrier from the housing, you need to run a few nuts up tight to hold it in place so the axle shafts aren't in a bind.
It goes without saying that the vehicle needs to be up on blocks secure enough to withstand a 7.5 earthquake. No K-mart jackstands, OK?
