I need quick fix for fuel

Hey guys, been searching here for a couple hours and I think I know what I eventually have to do. My truck started its sputtering under load/high rpms so I'm guessing its the fuel pump/air problem. This morning it had the "swarm of bees" sound when i turned the key. The problem is, my wife is 9 months pregnant and I don't have the luxury of not having a vehicle ready to run. What would be the quickest fix to delay doing the either the in-tank pump or Hutch mod. It sounds like I should replace the quick connects with hose and clamps. Not to be rude, but I don't want any troubleshooting advice, just a stopgap for a couple weeks.

Fill your fuel tank all the way up and don't let it run under 1/2.
That will help a lot until your baby is born.

Just had this happen to me last week! Like Kwikk said and also, mine had a kinked fuel line (I have the prepump kit w/ rubber lines). 100% my fault. Put your hands up on top of the tank and feel around.

Hope you figure it out and good luck w/ the baby!

Thanks for the thoughts. Kwik, in one post you mentioned replacing the quick couplers with hose and clamps between tank and pump. Is that as simple as it sounds, just some 3/8" fuel line and clamps? I can handle driving it easy and it won't act up, but when wife drives it, she tends to get heavy footed and starves it. and right now its at 3/4 tank of fuel. First time it happened i was under 1/4. Is this a progressive problem now that I have it?

The hardest part is gaining access to the fittings.
Part of the deal is you need to get rid of the mixing chamber in the end of the pickup because it reintroduces any entrained air back into the fuel stream that is being fed to the pump, but if you eliminate the major source of the air intrusion ( the quick connects) it will be a vast improvement

ok, major problem now. couldn't even make it home tonight. sat on the road till wife came to pull me home. at least it was with the 79. I'm heading back out to work on it and maybe try and get the pump to make some pressure. it will fill the filter bowl, but i suspect not much more.

Man.. sorry to hear this. Check the screen on the pump.

Dropping the tank isn't too bad, just do it empty. The ITP kit is very complete and straight forward. Do the harpoon mod while you're in the there.

Do you have access to a neighbors car just incase she goes into labor, if you were to start this project? Where are you located? Maybe some fellow FTE'ers could toss in some assistance.

Attaboy. Any problems from here ought to be the pump or filter if the CPS is good which I believe it is.

i tell ya what guys. I wouldn't have done what I did last night if it weren't for your help. I got the rig back on the road and smokin the tires for no money, just a little lost sleep. I don't like what i did with the hose and clamp, but it will hold till i get time to fix properly. I'm also not going back under there without washing it first. 15 miles of gravel roads a day doesn't make for good working conditions. Thanks again for all your help.
Is there any idea why this showed up all of a sudden?

Be sure to add some kind of pre-pump filtration, as there's now nothing to prevent "tank gunk" from getting to your (pricey) fuel pump.

It doesn't have to be fancy, but it has to filter.

You know, i wondered about a filter. It can be as simple as an inline right before the pump can't it? Any suggestions? I read on one post it needs to be 'suction rated' and for diesel.

final update! dropped tank again to finish the quick connect delete. also cut the one before the pump and added an inline filter there. as a last minute thought, plumbed in a pressure gauge i picked up at the surplus center into the filter housing. turn the key, a couple little gurgles and gauge hits 70 psi. start it up and all is good. Thanks again to all who helped.
