Rear Main Help

I am helping my neighbor rebuild the engine in his 78 F-350 flat bed. Everything has gone fine, starts and runs, except it is puking oil from the rear main. Already dropped the pan and put another seal in. If anything it seems worse now. Anybody got some good tips or tricks to replace a two piece rear main and get it to hold? Also what is the difference between the rubber and rope style seals? Any help would be great as this is all that is stopping this truck from being on the road.

Rope sux! Make sure the lips of the seal are pointing the correct way. People put them in backwards all the time and then the seal just directs oil right out of the engine!

Rope does not sux. You just don't know how to perform a difficult task, or have no patience. They worked for years, and you can do them w/o pulling the trans & flywheel/flex-plate.

Betcha don't like that. Heh. tom

The '60's and '70's smallblock rear main bearing cap has a pin that held the factory rope seal. Unless you are going to use a rope seal, remove this pin by driving it out with a center punch. If you leave this pin in, it will distort the replacement steel and rubber rear main seal, causing a leak.
