Well after 200k and good luck my truck finally left me stranded on the road.
If any of you 6.0l experts can give me an idea whats wrong please let me know. It's going to a Ford dealer next week. I need to know what internal organ I'm gonna have to sell to pay for it.
Driving to work the other day and noticed the power was starting to drop a bit. On my way home from work 10 hrs later....truck starts normally, but is really down on power now. Get on the freeway and can't get over 50 mph. No matter how much throttle I give it. Get off the freeway and come to a stop on the side of the road and it dies.
I assume its a fuel filter since I run B100 most of the time. I change them out the old ones are still really clean. Turn the key on with the engine mounted filter out and notice plenty of fuel being pumped from the tank pump.
The truck starts normally. so I think great all is good my PSD world. I turn the A/c on cause it's 105 out and the truck dies. Starts again, I leave the A/C off this time and no matter how much throttle I give it it wont go above idle and finally it stalls out again and wont start. It's will crank and almost act like it wants to start but wont. I didn't crank on it too much, dont want to damage injectors if there not getting fuel.
Any of you PS gurus have any ideas what might be wrong.
Could be as simple as a sensor (Cam or Crank Position). My money however is on a High pressure oil leak/problem. Could be a leaking HPOP fitting, bad check valve etc. Without the tech running the diagnostics on it, is tough to pinpoint.
Let the tech do all the diagnostics on it and then you will know the exact problem and how to proceed. And yes 200K is a fair amount of miles and unfortunately mechanical things start to wear out.
I was under the impression if the HPOP was bad the engine would just quit and not die slowly like mine did. I'm still pretty new to diesel so I'm just basing that on rumor and wishful thinking. My father in law just had his HPOP replaced in an 06 SD cost him 2300 bones. I'm in the middle of buying a house and cant spend that much right now.
hotroddsl, I'm livin in Casa Grande right now till my house is built in Marana.
By the way changing fuel filters on the side of the road in 100 degree heat SUX!!!!!
Well with a High pressure oil leak, it depends how bad the leak is, sometimes for a minor leak it is only really bad when the engine is hot. But without the tech diagnosing it, it could be alot of things there are many sensors on the motor that can cause it to lose power and stall.
OK...$320 charge for diagnostics and the HPOP is bad. Service manager tells me its gonna cost an additional $2200 to replace it. $640 for the pump the rest labor and assorted parts (gaskets, o-rings,etc). That sounds like a little much for the pump...I can get one from a sponsor here for about half that price. What about labor, is that a realistic amount? How hard would it be for me (shadetree mechanic) to tackle this. I've never wrenched on a diesel before. Worked on gas engines as a hobby for the last 20 years or so. You think this could be a job for a do-it-yourselfer?
call ADS in Chandler & talk to Greg La Fontsee www.adsaz.biz I have known him & his shop for 10 years & have taken all my fleet vehicles to him since 1996, they are honest & dependable & excellent with diesels there just at I-10 & chandler bvld. its worth it even to tow it as that price sounds a lot high to me ask Greg. (I have even sent my grandmas car there)
Hey Tj,
I hope that my six-oh will last for 200k miles. I only have 56k on mine (built date January 03) but always enjoy reading your posts.
Have you kept yours stock? Or have you made any modifications?
The first thing I'll do when my 5/100k warranty expires will be to brew my own.
TJ,
Go w/ Hotrodds advise and get a 2nd opinion from a local diesel shop other than a Ford dealer as that seems high. Check w/ other 6.0 owners in your area to see if there are any LIPD's or Innovative's in your neck of the woods. Not sure of your location but it looks as though ADS may have you covered. Good luck.
