Question 97 explorer won't charge

My wife was driving her explorer as she usually does then when she came home and tried to start it, it wouldn't. Volts were down to nothing and clock and radio stations needed to be reset. We boosted it but almost as soon as we took the cables off it died. Now the anti theft blinking light stays on constant but no power to anything unless the key is in accessory then you can set the radio stations and clock and they work fine. This has never happened before. Can anyone shed some light on this for me

Probably battery, alternator, or bad connection. You need to do some testing to figure out which one it is.

Put your charger on it, then fire it up & see if you get about 14 volts at the battery.

Also check mini fuse 6 under the hood in the power distribution box. It wont charge if that fuse is blown.

Yes, get a voltmeter and check the battery voltage. While checking the battery voltage on the battery terminals, try to start it. If the voltage goes really low and it wont start, put a charger on the battery and let it sit for about 8 hours. Then try all the above again. If the voltage goes low and it won't start, then the battery sounds bad.

If it starts, read the voltage with the engine idling. If it's around 12 volts, there is something wrong with the charging system.
