Transmission Change Out

Transmission Change Out
OK FTE's. Hears my problem. A friend and I are rebuilding a 62 Econo P/U.
When we purchased it someone had installed a automatic transmission. I assume it originally had a manual as the clutch is still present and the shift lever is obviously not original. Jimbare broke down my vin and facts numbers for me. The data plate indicates a 1 tranny code. Jimbare said he thought it should be an A,
3 speed. Also after the horse power and rpm numbers is 2838 special order number. It also has a 7-1/4 inch light duty axel with a 170 C/I engine. Whats with the 1 tranny code and the 2838 special order number. We eventually want to change back to the manual if it is possible with what We have available. We
have a 65 Econo van with the 240 C/I engine 3 speed xmission, heavy duty axle
9 inch. Can it be done. Will the 240 bell housing mate up to the 170 C/I block.
Sorry about all the questions in one post.
Will Appriciate any advice.

special order numbers are for commercial orders like ma bell, p acific gas and electric, ya know, the big orders of a thousand or so.
as for changeing the 62 for 65 parts,
the motor mounts completely differant, but it can be changed.
trans mount is also differant, but a tail section from a toploader out of a 63-64 will take care of that.
rear end is a direct bolt in swap, but, the small rearend uses a little u joint, 9 inch uses a big u joint. and there is no crossover u joint made.
240 bell will not mate to the small six. 65-67 with the small six are the years with the proper bell housing.

Falcon Trannys are the same from those years. The only difference is that you have to change the tailshaft of the tranny from a Falcon. They are longer, but the guts are the same and the bolt up to the 170 engine is the same. You still need to put on a short Econoline trans tailshaft to mount it to the trucks tranmission mount. The falcon tranny will not have the same tranny mount. The trucks is on top of the tranny.

U-Haul had 1000's of special F350's built, and the parts used are not listed in the parts catalogs. So what does one do if he needs parts that are special to the truck? He calls Ford, and gives them the 6 digit DSO. Ford looks up the invoice number and gives him the part numbers for the special equipment. This very system is still used today. This may be the reason your #1 trans code isn't listed. It was special equipment for your Econoline. There is no #1 code listed in the 1957/63 truck parts catalog. It is listed in the car parts catalog = 3 speed manual transmission. What is the difference between the 3 speed transmission used in a car, as opposed to one used in your Econoline? Ask Ford.

The best solution to you is to find a good as original as possible donor vehicle a '61 to '64 van or pick up ... that is a 3 speed and swap out ... most cost effective way of returning stuff to where it should be ... don't forget these are 40 year old crates and most service centres have never seen one ...
