I've become increasingly intrigued by the early broncos. I have been looking for about six months
and recently came across a 1969 Bronco. It seems to be in great shape with 64k original miles. It has a 302 V8 3spd. Any suggestions as to some things I should pay special attention to, also, what are some of the favorite things that endear you to your bronco. I really love the way this truck looks!
Things you need to look for
1. Rust. The most common place the old broncos rust out are the floor pans, the front of the top in the rain gutter, the front of the hood, and in the rocker panels.
2. Also their can be a lot of bondo on them.
3.look for oil leaks in all the seals, im willing to bet that it has a few.
One thing about the 69 it didn't have a danna 44 it had the dana 30. They didn't use the 44 until 71.1/2. Usually on the 3 on the tree the shift tubes are worn out and the get stuch in second gear. If this happens you can get under the hood and shift it manually. I love the old broncos we have a 67 and a 73. Thier addictive. I hope you have fun with yours. p.s. keep a extra starte sylonoid around.
I owned a '69' Bronco in the late 1970's. The Dana 30 front will handle a lot of power if you do not over tire the front and also tack weld a continuous strap (3/8" thick X 2" wide) along the underside of the axle tube-under the "pumpkin"-under the opposite axle tube. I swapped engines twice: the first being a modified 351W out of a 1970 Shelby Mustang and then a 429 SCJ with a C-6 auto tranny. The necessary adapters came from "Advance adapters" (C-6 input shaft to transfer case) out of California as I remember it. I would run large paddle tires in the rear but never on the front. I never broke the rear or front drive train even after eventually adding a 150 HP nitrous kit to the 429SCJ. As far as the shifter wearing out you can always put in a floor shifter, there are kits readily available.
