My amps light is on and my voltage is showing less than 12 volts. My mechanic tested the alternator and said it was bad. However, I found a small black wire with a 90 degree connection boot attached to it. I looked all around and could not find anything obvious that it should connect to. The only thing that I found that is remotely possible is a small bolt coming off the side of the altenator. It is about 3/4" long and smaller than a 1/4 / 20 bolt. Any info would be nice.
Also, if I take the alternator in to be tested would the test tell me what parts need to be changed out on it. I was told rebuilding one was not that big a deal.
If you take it into the store, it will pass/fail. I seem to remember it listing the different tests that it fails or passes, but I don't know if you will be able to make heads or tails of what it's trying to tell you.
If it does fail, I think I would take it apart and look at it, but it would be nice to find some info on how to test some of the internals. I did a quick look and did not find anything, but you may be able to do some web searching and find out what's going on. I did look up some of the internal parts prices, and they are not cheap. The rectfier assembly is almost half the cost of a rebuilt unit. And the regulator assembly is not cheap either, so it's not like you can go in and replace everything and be cheaper than a rebuilt unit.
