well i just finished doing plenty of work to my 1997 F150 4x4 with the 4.6L....and i drove it about 300km today and never had any problems and then i was driving around my local town and all of a sudden the check engine light started flashing...so i turned it off...left it sit for 5 minutes...turned it back on and tried again...about 5 mintes later...started flashing....so i called my friend with his code reader....and he came by...i got the codes...but he never had his book on hand so i dont know what they all mean....so if anyone could let me know that would be great.
PO304
PO307
PO171
PO174
PO304 P(i do think it stand for pending....thats what he said anyways)
PO307 P
PO171 P
PO174 P
so a description of each code would be great...i think i know what some of them are...but ill see what you guys say!
Sounds like it overheated. I believe when the check engine light starts blinking the computer has gone into fail safe cooling mode and is shutting down cylinders.
hmm i dont ever rememeber seeing the tempature guage go up at all....and i sweep my guages often....could it be that becuase the cylinders were misfiring the motor thought it was going into shut-down mode?...therefor the check engine flashed?
do you think anything was wrecked?...the oil also seemed way to low..so i added some...i drove it about another 40km home and the light never started flashing again...think it was becuase of the oil?
also as for the 304 and 307 code...that means misfire...i was wondering if when i ripped 2 of the plug boot while taking them out to change plugs..would this cause these codes to throw?
as for the 171 and 174 codes...i am pretty sure they are doing that becuase my exhaust manifold is cracked...those codes were there when i bought the truck.
does this sound like a good "guesstimation" of the whole situation?
I’d just top off the fluids and keep my eye on the temp. someone may come along and say the blinking means something different, but I think solid = problem, blinking = overheating. As far as the plug boots, yes this could cause the misfire if the spark is able to arc to something else because of the missing boot.
alright will do...i will keep a close eye on it...as for the boots...do you know if ford sells them individually?...or do i have ot buy a whole set?...i only ripped 2 of them..so i hope i don't have to get a new set!!
You only have 4 codes.
The 171/174 are a pair in response to the same fault.
The 304 and 307 are missfires.
Why did you think you could ignor damaged boots?
The flashing CEL lamp is telling you there is excessive raw fuel at he cats.
Fix the cylinders or ruion the cats. That's expensive if you think buying boots is to much.
Boots are about $5 ea at an Auto Zone, replace all of them.
Then fix the fault for the 171/174 codes so the truck runs better.
its not that i thought i could ignore wires...its that i went to my auto parts store and they don't sell plug wires individually...and they wanted about $150CAD for a full set...which i was not prepared to spend at the time.
now i need to find a place that will sell my wires individually.
also i no longer have cats....when i bought the truck it had dual exhaust with the cats cut and re tapped O2 sensors.
as for the manifold cracked...i just don't have the money right now to fix it..and i am debating whether to go with headers or manifolds.
Alright....well i toook the truck out for a drive today..and before i did so i cleared all codes...took it out down a backroad for about 5 minutes...went up to 60mph...back down to a stop and then up to 60mph again....and just as i was coming back in the yard my check engine started flashing again..but my tempature guage was fine....so i plugged the code reader in and it had 2 codes...the 304 and 307...so i guess the check engine light is flashing becuase of the misfires...which must be caused by the ripped boots..as for my 171 and 174 code...they never re-appeared...but i have a feeling they will...becuase of my manifold.
i dont know if you know this or not but you can just unplug your your negative then positive battery cable while the vehicle is off and leave it for a while i usually go 1 minute but people always argue with me it works for me so hey im stickin to it and if you do this it will reset your computer
yes i know that resets the computer...but i was also told it resets what it has to learn every time to....so i am not sure
it isn't a big deal..i borrowed my buddy's code reader and i can just clear the codes with that anyways.
also i made some calls around and the only place that will sell me wires individually is a Ford dealership..and they want about $21 a piece....is this fair?
oh i forgot to mention that is $21CAD...so like $19USD....still not much of a difference...but where else could i get them?...they seem to be the only place that sells them separately..
flashing CEL signifies a missfire. Pre-99 4.6's are notorious for plug wire problems. buy a new set at the Dealership. From previous experience, I've found Aftermarket wires just don't work with that engine. After 99, ford went with the coil on plug design like the 5.4. I believe Motorcraft wires are cheaper as a set.
Cyl 4 and 7 missfire codes po304 p0307. lean codes p0171 and p0174. cause, either plugs, coils most likely. as for the lean codes, clean the maf sensor clear and see if they come back.
