94 Ranger Auto Tranny Problems

HI,
I have a 93 ranger 4L 4.0 w/the auto that has been acting erratic lately. When you are going dow the road around 60 or so it will vary about 500 rpms each way in OD. it doesn't act like its slipping but it acts like its always trying to shift and is really rough. Any ideas?

When was the last time you checked the fluid, or changed it?

fluid was changed about 7-8 months ago and is at proper level

I wonder if it has to do with the locking torque converter. The rough running might be engine related with the tranny reacting to that.
