Buckshot761,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

86 or 87 are the best years for the motor.

The 87 wiring harness will plug into the chassis harness.

It is not that big of a deal to cut off the connectors and wire it straight up.
I am running a 94 engine harness on my 86.
The 87 wiring harness lets you run the new style glow plugs and glow plug relay.
86 and older use the old style glow plugs.
Mid 85 and older engines have a thin block by the block heater.
Use of the block heater may cause cracks in the block.
That is why I recommend 86 or 87 engines.
7.3 engines will also bolt right in, but they are not rebuildable as far as i am concerned.
