Help me understand the fuel system

I'm waiting on some other parts so I decided it was a good day to pull my fuel filter and see what's in there. I still haven't driven this thing since I brought it home. Water drain valve was stuck, so I pulled the fuel out the canister with a syringe. The little heater element was loose from the aluminum plate so I just removed it. Is that ok? The bottom of the filter housing was filthy, dirty sludge and a little water. After cleaning it out, the drain valve works now. The hole near the top of the housing that goes to the driver's side into the FPR was dirty, I pulled the 2 10mm bolts and found the screen under a thick layer of crud. Is this the FPR screen I've read about? So how does this fuel system work? There's the big hole in bottom that the plastic post for the filter to sit on, a hole down low in the back, and the one at the top that goes to that little screen in the FPR. Can anyone explain the fuel flow path from tank to injectors to me?

Yes, the screen is the FPR screen. Basic fuel system (off of the top of my head, if I remember everything correctly) = The fuel pump (which is a two stage pump located in the engine valley) draws fuel from the selected tank and pumps it at low pressure through the fuel filter housing and filter and then back to the high pressure side of fuel pump, where it is pumped out at high pressure through the banjo bolt into both heads, through the fuel rails inside of the heads, (which supplies the injectors), to the FPR (which regulates the fuel pressure by bleeding off excess pressure via a relief valve) and then some of excess fuel goes into the filter housing (through the FPR screen) and the rest of the excess fuel returns to the selected tank. If I've missed anything or gotten something wrong, somebody will be along to correct me.

Thank you very much, the explanations and picture help a ton. I figured with 3 ports, there must be a return path in there. So now I think I need to pull that FPR screen again and clean the regulator side of it, I only cleaned the filter canister side. Is the screen a loose part? It didn't want to come out of the regulator body.

Any picture will post here as long as it's a gif jpe jpeg jpg pdf png psd. Most pictures are one of these.

You can't just copy and paste from your computer to this site. You need a picture hosting service or put them in your "Attachments" part of this site. All pictures have a URL like this but with out the brackets [] :
This is the location of that picture on the internet, no matter where it is, this one just so happens to be on this site but it could be anywhere. BTW: It is the picture I added in this post. Try it, remove the brackets and paste it in your browser and hit go. You will see the picture. If you save the link be sure to add a description so you will know what it is. Now you have that picture on your computer.

I add pictures as an attachment. You need to use the "Go Advanced" button when replying to a post instead of "Post Quick Reply", then add the attachment from the link "Manage attachments" button down the page. After they picture is uploaded from your computer you can use it as a link over and over again...anywhere on any site. You can see them in your "User CP" (Control Panel) under attachments.

You can make the picture show-up as a link or as the picture itself. If you want the picture to show use the "Insert Image"

Nice lesson. Thanx Cuda. I though I could copy and then paste from my comp. now I know. I would imagine I could upload these pics to webshots and access them there.

This helps ALOT! I'm a Diesel b00n and am reading like mad to self educate. I found myself in the 99-2002 section and was getting nothing but confuzzed.

All this regulater return stuff doesn't apply to us? Cackle apply to us? Air in the fuel?

Help a noob out.

Anyhow, I'm Cord, I'm new around here and to Diesels but not new to cars, trucks, 4x4s, bikes, etc. I'm addicted to anything with wheels.
Cheers,
Cord

Hi Cord-
Welcome to FTE! You can ignore the 99-02 section. All the real men drive OBS trucks with vent windows.
If you have any specific questions feel free to search for your answer because it's probably been asked before (probably by me).
If you still don't get what you need just post a new thread and someone will answer your questions. You should consider going to your user profile and modifying your signature to show what kind of truck you have and what options or mods are on your truck. It makes it alot easier for the other users to help you get the answers you need.
The OBS (94-97) trucks don't have the air/cackle issues. We have a fuel return line that lets the air get out of the system. You can get air in the system but you normally won't unless something is broken.
Welcome again.
