My dad has a rusted out 89 w/an injected I6 - I have a very nice 78 with a carbed 5.8 (ironically, I removed the I6 in it 5 years ago and swapped it with the V8). I am thinking of switching out the drivelines. Yes, I know, big job but within my realm of expertise.
I get 9 MPG right now. If I dropped in an injected I6 what could I expect - realistically?
BTW, this is not a work truck - it may carry pillows at some point but that's about it.
I'm in the Army so I am paying American prices; $3.38 for the cheap stuff. Germans are paying 7 bucks a gallon right now. I don't have the truck here but I am coming home in about a month and will be getting her out of storage. When I left, 9 MPG was painful at $1.75, it's going to suck at 3 bucks.
Depends on your gearing / tires / how you drive it. I get pretty decent MPG if I drive it steady. You'll get a bunch of different numbers, but honestly... It depends on your setup. If you help your truck breathe better, you SHOULD get better MPG too.
The set up I have now has a 351 Winsor, 4 bbl carb (600 edelbrock) dual plane intake, dual exhaust w/no pollution control, P235 tires. If I remember correctly I would get 9
The set up I have now has a 351 Winsor, 4 bbl carb (600 edelbrock) dual plane intake, dual exhaust w/no pollution control, P235 tires (stock rear end, whetever that was for an I6 powered 78 short bed). If I remember correctly I would get 9 around town driving nicely. An EFI I6 seems like a good idea...
I've had different 300's in different configurations. As several have said, MPG varies. In a plain-jane '79 carbed. model with high gearing, I got 22 on the highway (honest). With an F250, FI model with a T-18 strraight-shift with 3.55 rearend, mileage varied from 15 city to 19 highway. With the same truck changed to a C-6 auto, mileage now runs from 14.8 to 16.
Meck1 seems about right on. I have a 94 with E4OD and 3.55 rear. It gets 18.5-19.9 (city-Interstate), empty. That would be like pillows... I had a 82 with 2.73 C6 and a one bbl. It would get 24 MPG all day at 55 mph! Go figure.
I hear you on the 1 bbl but I don't think I could go back to that kind of snail like performance. 15-19 sounds nice, 22 sounds great but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that! The doner truck I am thinking of is a 91 - that would be an E4OD, right? (I am not near the truck and all my dad knows is that when he puts it in gear, it goes!)
