Have a 76 Bronco with 302, C4, and Dana 20 Tcase. Auto does nothing for down hill engine breaking. Have oportunity to purchase a NP435 with 205 Tcase bolted to it for $250. The setup is out of a 3/4 ton Ford. Has anyone attempted the swap? What has to be done other than adding clutch pedal and linkage? Is there much difference in overall length between the two setups?
the swap does take some fabricating, unless you get a parts bronco to work with. the 435/205 combo is bigger and heavier, and is most likely different length( you might get lucky).if so, you have to modify driveshafts.you also will have a shifter assembly to deal with.
I bought an adapter from Advance Adaptors, and bolted the NP435 to the Dana 20 with no problems. The overall length was within 1" of stock, so no driveshaft mods were necessary. The NP435 rean me $200, and the adaptor was $300+. This was about 6 years ago or so. I couldn't be happier with the NP435. What a difference from the 3 spd. The compund granny low is incredible in the short wheelbase Early Bronco. I'm not sure about swapping both tranny and transfer case, but I'm sure anything is possible. Driveshaft shortening and hole cutting might be cheaper than an adaptor, but it might not be.
Thanks for the replies. Sounds like it could be worth picking up these parts. Guess I can get my money back out of it pretty easy if I decide not to proceed. I am hoping to get lucky and not have to have shafts modified. Just spent $400 for new ones.
Anybody have any idea what I would be able to sell the C4-Dana 20 setup for?
Not going to attempt swap till end of April. Still gathering some parts. Going to wait till I see how much I like the 435 and 205 before I decide to sell. I like the auto great for everyday driving. Even good off-road. Lot of steep hills here in CO and think I will feel better with the 435 on down hills.
Have been told by some of the parts yards in Denver that I should be able to get $400 for the setup.
I'll let you know how it goes. Check back with me at RFitzsimmo(No Email Addresses In Posts!) incase I loose your screen id.
