I've read all the topics on people looking for a reasonably priced option to have a working horn in the stock location with a toyota/aftermarket power steering box.
I know that mid fifty's has the kit they sell for $300 but I haven't seen many people using that and I haven't seen any other options.
First of all, I was wondering how many of you are in this situation and would like to locate the horn in the correct location. Also, I was wondering what seems reasonably priced to you for a kit that would solve the problem and be relatively simple to implement.
A project may get underway soon that would solve this problem. And if it works it will look just like stock and work flawlessly, because I'm picky like that.
This topic crops up from time to time. So far there hasn't been a decent solution. Do a search for the subject. Someone posted a link or direction for how to make a slip ring set up that was pretty cool I think it was 51dueler that posted it. I tossed around the idea of using a clock ring from an air bag steering column.
I havent experimented with it as I'm running a late model steering column in my truck
I do know that if you find a cool easy solution you'll be the hero to alot of guys here.
A tip for doing searches:
after you click on the "search" button, then click on "advanced search" that way you can narrow your parameters adn confine the search to just this forum. This will help weed out a bunch of unecessary findings.
I've done the search and have read all those threads all the way through. The thing that strikes me is that none seem very easily adaptable, especially from a manufacturability standpoint. Most involve very customized parts and/or parts that need to be procured from current cars, etc. The idea I'm persuing got glossed over rather quickly in one thread. The project I'd like to work on would involve a remote signal at the button and some reciever easily monted under the dash. I mean, they already have those fancy billet buttons that sell for $500 plus that do 4+ functions, why not a simple one covered by the stock horn button that runs the horn. So you may have to replace a battery every 5 or so years, so what. And in this case if its a 2 channel reciever you could easily add remote door locks too. Ford trucks also can't be the only vehicle that have this problem and this way it could be marketed to a wider range of people.
I am just trying to get a feel for how many people actually run a stock column and have the same problem as myself. The $75-100 range was about what I was thinking for myself too, but I found nothing to suit the application in that range.
Thanks for the feedback.
To get a feel for what the other makes are doing, or if they have the same issue you could check out some of the chevy forums. Stovebolt.com is a good forum. There's bound to be a Dodge forum as well. YOu might ask the guys of at the H.A.M.B forum as well as they deal with all sorts of vehicles.
