Red face fuel guage

my truck is a 1988 ford f150 supercab 4x4 and its gotta a 302 with a 5 speed transmission. when its running the gas guage reads way above a full tank and it wont go down til i turn the key off. has anyone else had this problem and how can i fix it. thank you

Just a guess (I'm not sure), but maybe the float lever is stuck in the up position. The fuel gauge needle, should default to reading empty when switched off, because the power is turned off the unit.

In my 94 F150 both of my units failed (dual tanks), but they would read empty. I took off my bed, removed the pumps, and changed the sending units. Now they work like new.
