PS box specs

Sence no one answered me in the 61-66pu section I will ask the the Bronco fans.

Here we go again with the power steering! I have a 66 4x4 and want to put power steering on it. Can any one provide me with the specifications on a Bronco steering box? Of all of the boxes I have looked at this one (in pictures only) and it looks as if it will work. How ever my concern is the main steering shaft lenght as I beleive the frame widths are diffrent. I know that james duff sales a kit to convert the bronco to a 70's-80's vintage box with at little welding. Any one have any ideas or information? Or should I buy rebuild standard box?

What kind of specifications are you looking for? Bolt pattern? Overall length? Height? To give dimensions on such an irregular object is not easy or accurate. What do you mean by main shaft? Input or output, and how does frame width affect it?

Although I have not had any problems with my power steering box, many Bronco owners with taller tires consider them a little weak; therefore, a popular swap is an F150 box which is what you should probably set your sights on. Face it, anyhting you choose is going to require at least some modification to truck and/or steering gear.

The stock early Bronco PS unit is about 3" shorter
than the contemporary F-xxx pickup unit, and the
sector shaft goes outside, not inside, the frame
as with the pickups (so I understand). The swap
from pickup to EB goes OK when accompanied by
a lift (eg 3" or greater) and a brace to lessen
stress to the frame/PS unit combo.

James Duff sells a (Saginaw) PS unit which is early-Bronco like
but may actually be a reconditioned International Scout
PS unit. It does not fit the EB as well as the stock
EB PS unit but the length dimensions are roughly
the same as the stock EB PS unit.

For '78 and later Broncos, I believe their PS units
are the same as the F-xxx's of the same year
(possibly F-150 4x4).

Bronco boxes are the only direct bolt on and are getting rare and expensive. You can mount an f-150 2wd box on the inside frame rail but need at leat 2" of lift for this to work as the f-150 box is longer. You can take a 2wd sector shaft and put it into a 4wd ford f-150 box and use it. There is more info on this at www.bcbroncos.com , but this is not a bolt on application. I know people that have used toyota or nissan boxes with success, a few of the bolt holes line up but the linkage or the pitman must be fabricated.
