i'm looking at putting the lowest gears in my axles as possible. right now i'm running 42" tsls with 4.11. not low enough kinda doggy. i've looked around and the lowest i.ve found are 5.38 to fit my dana 60 reverse cut front, and my sterling 10.25 rear. anyone ever see anything lower than that?
not for those differentials I havent, 5.38 seems to be as low as they go......which is good because running those heavy TSLs through whatever you're going to be running them through, there would be a prominent danger of breaking the pinion. I have a friend with a chevy (don't know what rear-end though, its all custom) that is running 7.17s with 54"Iroks, and a couple times, when he gets in a spot where the skinnny pedal needs to go to the floor to get out, bye-bye pinion gears

i've never broke a pinion, a couple of transfercase yokes, before these axles i had a d44 and a ford 9 with 5.13 and 39.5 tsls. always broke front axle shafts. anyways... rumor has it ford offers 7.17 for the 10.25. haven't been able to find any.and nothing lower than 5.38 for the rc d60. looks like i might be stuck with 5.38s.
What are "Rockies"? where can i get them? also Highboy390fe i'm guessing you are running a 390. I'm running a built up 351M. id like the best gearing to get the most power to the ground.
well.. i think if 5.38 is the lowest i can go i'll do that. i liked how it performed with my old 5.13 and the 39.5 tsl so with the 42 tsl and 5.38 should be about the same. i don't drive it on the streets so i just figured the lower i can go i might as well. always room for improvment i guess.
Not to get off topic on gears but have you considered doing something with the T-case? That 205 just has a 2 to 1 low range. There is a place that makes a kit to use a 203 low range box in front of the 205 to give you a second low range of almost 4 to one.
I have a doubler box in my Explorer. It is not the same as I mentioned above but uses a second 1350/1354 to make the doubler. The 1350's low range is 2.48 so my low ranges are 2.48 and 6.15. I love it.
If you like that idea let me know and I'll try to locate the link for it.
HappyJack makes a strong point. The doubler is a great way to lower the overall ratio. Another option is a 3:1 low gear set in the 205, or both, a doubler, and a 3:1 kit. Now that would be low.....
ya i thought about a 203/205 doubler its about $500 from the place i found. but the only thing is i thought it would put more stress on the drive shafts and u-joints. i could be wrong. plus than i would have to make a new front shaft and shorten my rear. ond a new crossmember.i just put these axles under my pickup and made the driveshafts and what not. i just thought ring and pinions would be the quickest way right now. and maybe if i'm not happy with the outcome put a doubler in also.
