I bought a boat it is a 1980 wellcraft with I/O it said 200 hp on the nada web sight. I was told it was a 350 Chevy and the bottom knocked but I got it home and pulled it and started to break it down to find that it is a ford which is great for me because I am a ford nut and this is going in my speed boat project. But how can I tell if it is a 302 or a 351 w is there any clues for the regular Joe to see or what. Thanks
I don't know how anybody could mistake a chev engine for a ford, since one has the distributor in the rear and the other is in the front.... but I guess to the untrained eye all motors look the same.
There are several ways to distinguish between a 302 and 351. The base of the distributor is nearly flush with the intake gasket on the 302, while it's 1.5" below on the 351. Also, the deck height(crank centerline to head gasket) is 8.2" on a 302 and 9.5" on a 351.
