I know about the rattle coming from the access panel on the bell housing. What I want to know is can that piece be left off with no adverse effects or could I take it off and put a bead of high temp silicone on the piece and reinstall it? What else could I use since it gets so hot there?
Any ideas guys? I have the silicone and don't see why it would cause a problem, I just wanted to know if anyone thought it was a bad idea or had a different product to use. I am going ahead an replacing the Y pipe to get rid of the heat shield possibility. When I hit the pipe in front of the Banks muffler I can hear a small rattle in it so I have 4 wheel parts sendming me a replacement unit. Other than that I guess I could try the Cat which is an flowmaster high flow cat. I wish I could just hang under there and trouble shoot it while someone drove it. Just kidding, but it would make things easier.
Silicone will make quick work of your o2 sensors which are very expensive to replace. If the leak is downstream it won't cause a problem.
Just curious, what would silicone on the the bell housing plate do to the O2 sensors. Last time I replaced my O2 sensors I went with the Bosch O2 sensors with a lifetime warrenty. I know that it does say exhaust rattle, which it is, but I was told the bell housing often rattles too (which it does) so I added it to the post. I hope this doesn't come accros as being short.
Ok, you are thinking of applying it to the bell housing. I guess I read your post wrong. I'm not sure what I was thinking.
Ha, I kinda figured that. I had the plate off for two days and the majority of the rattle went away. The rest is coming from the Banks exhaust. I can hit it with my hand and hear a slight rattle inside. When accellerating at 2500 and above I can hear it. It's under warrentey from Banks so that is not a problem, it is just that I drive so much and I am not in one place for long enough to get everything arranged. So this week I am going to call Banks and tell them I will be at home for from Thursday morning to that evening and if I could get a replacement shipped to the house. Then I could get it installed at my mechanic and RMA it on Friday. I guess I will just try and tell them that I will pay for it and then return the old one. I hope that will work. So far this year we have been in the truck for over 700 hours. Any noise or rattle out of the ordinary will get to you quick!!
Silicone bead should not hurt anuything on the cover plate. All its there for is to keep rocks and junk from getting at the flywheel teeth or jamming up inside there. That should be perfectly fine to do. It should have some drain/vent holes for any water or anything that might get in there, make sure you dont plug those up.
